GONG/SOUND BATHS

Every Fortnight we have Sonic Love bringing soothing sounds and healing vibrations to the Hub. From 7.15pm, the sound session is finished at 8.30pm You are then welcome to stay for a cup of tea and a treat (healthy, sugar free and delicious)

WHAT IS A GONG/SOUND BATH?

During a gong/sound bath you are immersed in sounds. Gongs, singing bowls, chimes, rainsticks, drums are amongst some of the instruments used to create a soothing, harmonic, vibrational, audio and physical experience. The listener lays down on a yoga/camping mat, has pillows or bolsters to support them and a blanket. They will then be guided into a grounding meditation, sometimes with a breathing exercise.

Then the soundscape will begin. Many people find they can relax a lot quicker through a sound bath than through meditation alone. As their mind quietens, the body can relax and surrender to deep rest.

BENEFITS OF GONG/SOUND BATHS

The use of gongs for stress release, meditation and healing has become more popular in the last few decades. I believe this is due to an increase in mental exhaustion and health issues connected to any form of stress, mental, emotional or physical. The powerful vibration that a gong creates is great for relieving stress, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, blood pressure lowers and the heart rate slows down. The listener falls into a very relaxed meditative state. Once in this relaxed state the vagus nerve is activated. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It starts in the brain and passes through the digestive system, liver, spleen, pancreas, heart and lungs. Our brain, heart and stomach communicate via the vagus nerve, this is why we feel emotions through our gut. It helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is the system of ‘rest and digest’. Activating the vagus nerve has a positive effect on the whole body and mind, improving the immune system, digestion, heart, blood pressure and all physical and mental wellbeing.

“One study published in the journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine found that an hour long sound meditation helped people reduce tension, anger, fatigue, anxiety and depression while increasing a sense of spiritual well-being” ‘Marlynn Wei M.D J.D’
